Description

P
atzcuareo is a large town and municipality located in the state of Michoacan.  The town was founded sometime in the 1320s, at first becoming the capital of the Tarascan state and later its ceremonial center.  After the Spanish took over, Vasco de Quiroga worked to make Patzcuaro the capital of the New Spain province of Michoacan, but after his death, the capital would be moved.  Patzcuaro had retained its colonial and indigenous character since then.
T
he town sits on the southern edge of Lake Patzcuaro, and the lake still has important economic and cultural significance for the town.  The
pez blanco
(whitefish) fishing drew tourists but are no longer fished because of the lake’s contamination, although on special occasions the famous butterfly nets are often displayed in canoes on the water.
T
his Real Photo Card captures the fishermen with butterfly nets, possibly when they were still really fishing.  “Kodak Mexicana Ltd” is credited on the reverse and the Kodak stamp box is dated between 1930 and 1950.  It is in good condition with just minor wear and a clean, clear image and reverse.
The colors on the images are a more neutral B&W than the scan.
Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.  Corrections appreciated.
