FROM THE ESTATE OF ROBERT B. SOUR, MANHATTAN SONGWRITER AND PAST PRESIDENT OF BROADCAST MUSIC INC. (BMI): AN ORIGINAL STUDIO RECORDING OF THE 1952 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION CAMPAIGN SONG TITLED "DON'T LET'EM TAKE IT AWAY". THIS CAMPAIGN SONG, ALONG WITH THE IRVING BERLIN TUNE "I LIKE IKE", BEGAN TO MARK THE END OF AN ERA FOR PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SONGS MEANT TO STIR UP THE POPULACE FOR VOTES.ROBERT SOUR BEGAN HIS CAREER WITH BROADCAST MUSIC INC. IN NEW YORK CITY AS A LYRIC EDITOR IN 1940 AS THE COMPANY WAS LAUNCHED. HE WORKED HIS WAY UP TO PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY IN 1965. DURING HIS MANY YEARS WITH BMI HE HAS HELD MANY POSITIONS WHICH HAS ENABLED HIM TO DEVELOP CLOSE TIES WITH MANY SONGWRITERS, COMPOSERS FROM POP TO CONCERT MUSIC, NOT ONLY IN NEW YORK BUT ALL OVER THE U.S. HE HAD WRITTEN OVER 100 PUBLISHED SONGS AND WAS CO-LYRICIST OF THE ICONIC JAZZ CLASSIC "BODY & SOUL" ALONG WITH THE TALENTED MAESTRO JOHNNY GREEN. HE ALSO WAS AN EXECUTIVE WITH THE AMERICAN GUILD OF (MUSIC) AUTHORS AND COMPOSERS (AGAC).
OTHER SCARCE AND POSSIBLY ONE OFF RECORDINGS FROM SOUR'S PERSONAL COLLECTION WILL BE LISTED AS TIME ALLOWS.
LISTED HERE IS A STUDIO RECORDING OF THE CAMPAIGN SONG WHICH WAS USED FOR THE 1952 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION HELD IN THE INTERNATIONAL AMPITHEATRE IN CHICAGO, ALONG WITH ADDITIONAL LYRICS FOR THE SONG THAT WERE APPARENTLY NOT USED. THE PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE FOR THE DEMOCRATS WAS ADLAI STEVENSON OF ILLINOIS AND HIS RUNNING MATE WAS JOHN SPARKMAN.
I HAVE LISTENED TO THIS RECORDING AND IT PLAYS THROUGH FINE AND APPEARS IN EXCELLENT, HARDLY USED CONDITION. INCLUDED IS THE ORIGINAL PENCIL AND INK MANUSCRIPT OF THE WORDS AS WRITTEN BY ROBERT SOUR. MUSIC WAS BY BERNIE WAYNE. ALL WRITING ON THE MANUSCRIPTS ARE BY SOUR, INCLUDING HIS NOTATION, "WRITTEN AND INTRODUCED AT DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION - CHICAGO, 1952".
THE LYRICS WRITTEN ON THE MANUSCRIPT NOT ONLY SHOW THE WORDS AS THEY ARE SUNG ON THE RECORDING, BUT ALSO INCLUDE AN "AD LIB" VERSE WRITTEN BUT NEVER USED AT THE CONVENTION AS FAR AS I WAS ABLE TO FIND. THIS "ALTERNATE VERSE" WHICH IS NOT FOUND EITHER IN THE SONG, OR IN THE SHEET MUSIC FOR THIS SONG (NOT INCLUDED HERE), IS AS FOLLOWS:
"WHEN CUSTOMERS KEEP COMING TO THE STORE - THEIR BREADLINES AREN'T HEAD-LINES ANYMORE".
THIS RECORDING WILL BE SHIPPED IN A HEAVY DUTY RECORD MAILER.
THIS IS AN EXTREMELY HARD TO FIND, NEARLY 70 YEAR OLD PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN ITEM, ESPECIALLY WITH THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND ALTERNATE VERSE APPARENTLY NEVER USED, THE PROVENANCE OF WHICH IS THE ORIGINAL AUTHOR OF THE PIECE.
