Description
Mamiya Universal Press 4x5 Graflock adapterThis 3-D printed adapter is an opportunity for you to maximize the versatility of your Universal. This is one of my custom "Lo- Fi" designs for your creative enjoyment. It allows you to shoot 4x5 film in Graflock specific 4x5 sheet film holders, like the 4x5 Grafmatic and the various Polaroid 500 through 550 holders. If you use the typical DDS style(dual dark slide), I make a 4x5 cut film back that is featured in another listing.
The adapter is dialed in to your viewfinder, so there is little need for a ground glass with the typical lenses. If you want a ground glass for this back, you can make one out of an old film holder, buy one on ebay that someone makes, or visit my ebay store for the 4x5 Graflock ground glass.
I reinforced the mounting lugs for a perfectly tight fit that is really strong. I printed solid tops and bottoms with fill at 50 percent(much more than the average 20 percent fill that typical 3-d objects are printed), as well as 70 percent fill on the sliding rails.
To use this back, just mount it like any other back(locking the lugs on both sides while making sure it is firmly mated). Slip the film holder in place, then push both top and bottom sliders firmly in place. Finally, there is a twist knob on the upper right corner that is meant to be pulled and twisted in order to give the corner support. The knob itself can be unscrewed and flipped in order to give support to wider backs.
Finally, note that I was not able to create a full clearance back. Quite a bit of it sticks out the bottom, so you will not be able to set the camera flat on the table. Since this is the case, handle it with care, as plastic will give before metal. Do not grab or pick it up by the adapter or the back, as the weight of the camera will put all of the stress on the mounting lugs, potentially damaging the camera and the adapter. Use should not damage this product, but abuse will. Proper use will allow a long life.
This was tested in full daylight with 800iso film with no evidence of light leaks. If you find that you have light leaks, make sure to inspect your film backs closely for worn felts and/or gaskets.
