    Description

This early out-of-print book is a definitive guide to antique Liverpool Herculaneum pottery (Herculaneum was one of the first factories in England to make non-frit bone china). In addition to covering the history and production of this ware, this book has nearly 200 black-and-white and some color photographs illustrating examples of this ware with complete in-depth captions.
THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO LIVERPOOL HERCULANEUM POTTERY 1796-1840
by Alan Smith, Praeger Publishers, NY 1970.
The author traces the emergence of Herculaneum from the eighteenth century Liverpool potting tradition and shows to what extent its subsequent evolution, through the prosperous years between about 1800 and 1820, depend upon the tradition. He analyzes the gradual decline of the factory in the face of competing commercial interests on Merseyside until its closure in 1840, and provides hitherto unpublished details of the Herculaneum satellite works in Saint Helens. The traditions of the factory are investigated, and details of exports show to what extent America relied on this Lancaster factory for fine pottery. The numerous pictured examples of this ware coupled with in-depth captions and scholarly narrative, make this text an indispensable reference book and identification guide for the serious collector, dealer, or historian of early English pottery and porcelain wares.
