    Retro style from Portugal
Extravagant Art Déco ring with diamond & spinels, Lisbon around 1945
    description
In the late 1930s, the Parisian jewelry stores in particular developed a variety of Art Déco that is known to us today as the “retro style”. It differed in its warm gold tones and expansive shapes from the cool, graphic designs in diamond-set platinum, which had shaped the decade before. This new style soon spread throughout the western world. The reason for such a change was not initially due to the sheer desire for change. Platinum, for example, was de facto no longer available to goldsmiths in sufficient quantities by the beginning of the war, which is why the switch to gold was not only voluntary. Because making a virtue out of necessity - that was what the goldsmiths of the late 1930s and 1940s were excellent at. An old European cut diamond, probably cut around 1900, and two synthetic spinels are also the protagonists of the present ring from around 1945. The sculptural shape of the large ring head is reminiscent of folded strips of fabric. Millegriffes and small diamond roses enrich the design made of gold and silver. According to the stamp, the ring was made in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

    about us
    Hofer antique jewelry
arose from the joy of beautiful things. It all started with my grandma, who was a lady who liked to adorn herself. She could tell something about each of her pieces of jewelery and when she opened her jewelery box, a world opened up: fond memories and touching stories connected with the pieces marked the highlights of a lived life. Based on these experiences, over the years a passion grew in me to deal with these small and always very personal objects.
