    Description

Goldwater in '64 ... pin from Republican Senator from Arizona, Barry Goldwater's unsuccessful Presidential campaign against LBJ. Goldwater received the endorsement of Ronald Reagan who would go on to become one of the most beloved Republican Presidents of all time!  Despite getting Reagan's endorsement, on Election Day, Goldwater lost to Johnson by what was then considered a "landslide," the largest margin of loss in history. Goldwater accumulated 52 electoral votes to Johnson's 486 and he garnered only 39% of the popular vote!  Goldwater did carry six (6) states: Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and his home state of Arizona. Goldwater's strong showing in the South was largely due in part to his support of the white southerners' view on civil rights ... that states should be allowed to control their own laws without federal intervention or intrusion.
