    Description

    THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF DUNCAN GLASS
by Gail Krause, Exposition Press, NY 1976/1997.
”Duncan glass has its historic beginnings in 1865 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when George Duncan bought out Ripley and Company.  Prior to this, he and Daniel C. Ripley had worked together manufacturing bar glasses and flint glassware. Harry and James Duncan, sr. joined their father along with George’s son-in-law, Augustus H. Heisey – thus, George Duncan & Sons.  John Ernest Miller joined in 1900 under the name of the Duncan & Miller Glass Company.  Later the company was sold and the factory closed in 1955.”
This book provides a comprehensive survey of Duncan Glass wares.  Bowls, vases, table settings, candelabra, novelty items, rock crystal cuttings, and stemware patterns are just a sampling of the numerous glassware pictured and discussed.  Of special interest are Duncan’s exquisite swans, the pride of the production line.  Unique pieces are also shown, such as the lovely glass canes and company made the Labor Day marchers.  Color and black-and-white photographs, and reprint pages from the original 1884 George Duncan & Sons catalogue vividly capture the classical beauty and graceful design manifested in every piece.
This is an in-depth text which covers by chapter: Introduction; Duncan & Miller Patterns; Duncan Cuttings; Special Pieces of Duncan; Special Sets and Miscellaneous Items; Rock Crystal Cuttings; Lead Blown Stemware; Stemware Patterns; and 1884 Catalogue.   If you are a connoisseur of Duncan Miller glassware, you will certainly want to add this book to your permanent reference library.
