Frankfurt Cathedral
( German : Frankfurter Dom ), officially Imperial Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew ( German : Kaiserdom Sankt Bartholomaus ) is a Roman Catholic Gothic church located in the centre of Frankfurt am Main , Germany. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew.
It is the largest religious building in the city and a former collegiate church. Despite its common English name, it has never been a true cathedral (episcopal see), but is called the Kaiserdom (an " imperial great church " or imperial cathedral ) or simply the Dom due to its importance as former election and coronation church of the Holy Roman Empire.
As one of the major buildings of the Empire's history, it was a symbol of national unity, especially in the 19th century.
In 1867, St. Bartholomew's was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt.
( this engraving shows the original church, before the fire of 1867 and before the reconstruction after World War II ).
Previous to a night-time air raid in May 1944 , Frankfurt was home to Germany’s largest timberframe
old town
; the most beautiful examples of Gothic styled , half-timbered architecture in the entire country. Germany’s largest medieval old town was once also the home of famous poets , intellectuals and composers , such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Arthur Schopenhauer , Clemens Brentano , Ludwig Borne and Georg Philipp Telemann, just to name a few.
This
antique engraving
shows Frankfurt's
old town
as it was around 1840, some 100 years before its destruction in World War Two.
