    Description

Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book provides an in-depth study of:
CHINOISERIE:  POLYCHROME DECORATION ON STAFFORDSHIRE PORCELAIN: 1790-1850
.  By Howard Davis, The Rubicon Press:  London, 1991, First Edition.
During the seventeenth century, European designers were fascinated with the Chinese style had begun to imitate designs of the Chinese decorative motifs.  The potters of this time, who were producing heavy-bodied earthenware, “were intrigued by the translucent delicacy of Chinese porcelain and began to experiment widely in an attempt to discover the secrets of its manufacture.  This book is a first investigation into transfer printing in Staffordshire in 1783 when it was possible to produce competitively priced multi-colored wares in the Chinese style.”
This in-depth text discusses sources of Chinoiserie designs from the newly accessible-by-sea “Land of Silk,” the design categories, motifs and elements used in polychrome designs.  There is a section on “Marked Examples grouped chronologically under Factories,’ and one on “Unmarked Examples grouped stylistically.”  Three appendices on “Staffordshire Porcelain Manufacturers, 1759-1850”, on “Staffordshire Engravers links with European Potters,” and on “China Manufacturers from Trade Directories” add much useful information.  8 color plates, 265 black-and-white photographs provide rich illustration and identification of this ware.  There is also a bibliography to round out this valuable reference book for the collector, curator, appraiser or dealer of English pottery and porcelain ware.
