…… Measuring 19 ¾” by 23 ¾”, this early 19th-century Oil Painting is on stretched canvas is unsigned. After searching online and comparing the water, the sails, and several other features of this painting, and we are strongly attributing this 19th century painting to the English maritime artist Thomas Buttersworth (1768-1842). If you search online, you will find that Buttersworth frequently painted sea battles involving Pirate Luggers, and he also did not alwatys sign his work. This 19th-century canvas Painting depicts a nocturnal sea battle under a full moon between an armed British Frigate and a Pirate Lugger flying the Skull & Cross Bones. Both ships have sustained holes in their sails, and the frigate has just fired another cannonball towards the retreating ship. … The surface of this dark nighttime painting has an overall even and stable craquelure and it could benefit from a light cleaning. Under a strong black light, we found some professionally and invisibly in-painted restorations, and the 19th century, 25 ¼” by 29” Gold Gilt Frame has some small edge and corner gesso chips. ..
