Antique c.1750 Hand Carved Maritime Folk Art Wooden Corset Busk
For your consideration is an outstanding antique Corset Busk
All hand carved with elaborate ornamentation in seven panels, arranged vertically
Different folk art motifs in scrimshaw technique in each panel - heart forms, plants, a rosette and a view of a palm tree
Sailor's made busks like this were a common love token gift for the girlfriend or wife waiting on the shores, while her man would alleviate the long hours at sea with the thoughts of her
There is a symbolism in the busk, being worn close to the hearth
All original. We have an alike piece, apparently made by the same hand in regards of composition and manner of execution, which is dated 1750
Circa mid 18th century, circa 1750, found in New England
Measurements:
Approx. 13.25" long x 1.5" wide x 3mm thick
