Description
Very Rare and original, 1879 American Counterfeit Detector and Real Crime Volume fully titled "American Counterfeits How Detected and How Avoided. / Comprising Sketches of Noted Counterfeiters, and Their Allies; of Secret Agents, and Detectives; Authentic Accounts of the Capture of Forgers, Defaulters, and Swindlers; with Rules for Deciding Good and Counterfeit Notes, or United States Currency; a List of Terms and Phrases in Use Among This Fraternity of Offenders, &c, &c.”. By Captain George P. Burnham. Boston, 1879. Published by A. W. Lovering. 2nd Edition “With Portraits”. (First Published in 1875).This rare and fascinating, Post Civil War period Counterfeit Detector and True Crime Volume measures approx. 5 3/4” by 8” and contains 421 pages including approx. 20 portrait plates of noted American Counterfeiters, thieves, bank robbers and criminals of all sorts as well as members of the United States Secret Service who investigated the crimes.
The first chapter of this fascinating work gives general information on how to recognize spurious Bank Notes meant for the general public. Calling this a “Counterfeit Detector” is stretching the point as there are no engravings or illustrations as one would find in the detailed works by Laban Heath and others but rather here the typical advice is “compare the note to a note you know to be authentic” or”note the character of the paper”.
The remaining 390 pages of the Volume includes 39 aditional chapters each detailing particular crimes and particular criminals. The plates picture both criminals and detectives and include portraits of well known criminals and detectives of the period Peter McCartney, Fred Biebusch, Bill Gurney, Bill Dow, Thomas E. Lonergan, William Applegate, Cranky Tom Hale, Abner E. Newcomb, Charles E. Anchisi, Simeon Benson and Col. Bob Clark. The crimes include counterfeiting, smuggling, bank robbery, forgery, swindlers, etc.
The Book is a really fascinating read and it is surprising that it was not a more popular seller as we can find very few original examples offered for sale in Bookseller Catalogs.
This wonderful, 1879 American Counterfeit Detector and True Crime Volume is in very good condition. The Volume is bound in its original, pictorial, brick colored cloth boards which are intact and sound but cocked with some soiling and edge wear. The interior pages are complete and uniformly age toned. The signatures are shaken but all are attached at the block.
A very rare and original, 1879 American Counterfeit Detector and Real Crime Volume fully titled "American Counterfeits How Detected and How Avoided” and a fantastic addition to any collection!!!
