    Description

Very Rare and original, 1866 American Counterfeit Detector Volume with Bank Note engraved plates titled "Heath's Greatly Improved and Enlarged Infallible Counterfeit Detector at Sight; the Only Infallible Method of Detecting Counterfeit, Spurious, and Altered Bank-Notes, and Applicable to All Banks in the United States and Canadas, as Now in Circulation, or, That May Be Issued, With Genuine Designs From the Original Government Plates”. Second Edition. Boston and Washington, 1870. Published by Laban Heath. 2nd Edition / 1st Printing.
This rare and important, Post Civil War period Counterfeit Detector measures approx. 4 1/4” by 6 1/2” and contains 39 pages plus 18 (of 19 called for) beautifully engraved plates (lacking the 2 folding, bank notes engraved on bank-note paper stock of the period but including an additional, unnumbered plate).
The first edition of “Heath's Counterfeit Detector” was the first widely distributed, book form Counterfeit Detector published in the United States. Offered here is the enlarged and corrected Second Edition. The Volume includes plates printed by the American Bank Note Company (and other engravers) from the same plates that were used to print currency at the time. Also included are two plates picturing Laban Heath’s patented “Micro-Telescopic Glass” - a small hand held microscope like magnifying glass to be used to examine Bank Notes.
One of the most prolific publishers of counterfeit detectors, Laban Heath later offered instruction in his “system” of counterfeit detection. Addressing both businessmen and the public at large, he taught both men and women the art of counterfeit detection and published a “home edition” of his signature manual. He also marketed Heath's Micro-Telescopic Magnifying Glass for use in the detection of counterfeit currency.
This important, and very rare, American Currency Counterfeit Detector is in very good condition however it lacks the two, folding Bank Notes (Plates 15 and 16) as well as two leaves of text (pages 1&2 and pages 5&6). The Volume is bound in its original, blind stamped and gilt lettered, blue cloth boards which are intact and sound with some soiling and edge wear. The interior pages are generally well preserved with some owner ink stamps and pencil notations throughout. As stated above the Volume lacks 2 leaves of text and the two folding Bank Note plates but does include an additional plate of Bank Notes as well as two plates picturing various models of Heath’s patented Magnifying Glass.
A very rare and important, 1866 Post Civil War period 1st Printing of the2nd Edition of Laban Heath's Infallible Counterfeit Detector and, with all faults, still a fantastic addition to any collection!!!

    Important Notes about Shipping Charges:
The amount quoted for Shipping & Handling is calculated by eBay and is equal to the EXACT amount charged by the Post Office plus a .00 "packing fee" - the .00 fee is our only compensation for the virgin packing materials we use on all of our professionally packaged boxes as well as our cost for the salaried help that does most of our packing - as I am sure you can see, we make NO profit on the Shipping charges and, in fact, our costs are usually greater than the .00 fee.
